چکیده

Experimental evidence by several groups, including ours, indicates that spatial variations in the capillary-pressure-saturation relationship can dominate the saturation distribution and transport dynamics of CO2-brine systems in natural porous media. The importance of such small-scale capillary heterogeneity depends strongly on the local balance of the viscous, buoyancy, and capillary forces. In this paper, a numerical scheme suitable for capillary heterogeneity simulations is studied. Several conceptual models, and a CO2 core flood experiment have been simulated by our in-house simulator. The results are consistent with the theory and experimental observations.

Scaling of capillary trapping in unstable two-phase flow: Application to CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers

The effect of flow instabilities on capillary trapping mechanisms is a major source of uncertainty in CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers. Standard macroscopic models of multiphase flow in porous media are unable to explain and quantitatively predict the onset and structure of viscous-unstable flows, such as the displacement of brine by the injected CO2. We present the first step of a res...

CO2 Sequestration in Deep Aquifers

Disposal and long-term sequestration of anthropogenic "greenhouse gases" such as CO2 is a proposed approach to reducing global warming. Deep, regional-scale aquifers in sedimentary basins are possible sites for sequestration, given their ubiquitous nature. We used a mathematical sedimentary basin model, including multiphase flow of CO2, groundwater, and brine, to evaluate residence times in pos...

Study of Two Phase Fluid Flow in Water Wet Reservoir Rocks by Using X-Ray In situ Saturation Monitoring

Displacement of oil and water in porous media of reservoir rocks is described by relative                      permeability curves, which are important input data for reservoir performance simulation and drive mechanism studies. Many core studies, such as multiphase relative permeability, capillary pressure and saturation exponent determination, depend on the volume fractions of multiphase flui...

Preferential Mode of Gas Invasion in Sediments: Grain-Scale Model of Coupled Multiphase Fluid Flow and Sediment Mechanics

We present a discrete element model for simulating, at the grain scale, gas migration in brine-saturated deformable media. We rigorously account for the presence of two fluids in the pore space by incorporating forces on grains due to pore fluid pressures, and surface tension between fluids. This model, which couples multiphase fluid flow with sediment mechanics, permits investigating the upwar...
